Northwest Energy Savers:
Styles of Energy Efficient Windows
Windows come in many sizes and shapes. They can be fixed or they can open several ways. Let’s take a look at the various styles.
Fixed Frame or Picture Window
Refers to windows that are non-venting
Single Hung / Double Hung
In a Single Hung Window, only the bottom sash moves vertically. In a Double Hung Window, both sashes move.

Casement Windows are hinged at the sides. They project outward, providing significantly better ventilation than sliders of equal s
Awning
Awning Windows are hinged at the top and open outward.
Bay Window
A bay window is made up of three or more windows. The side units project out from the building in 30, 45, or 90 degree angles. The center is parallel with building wall and is made up of one or more windows. All the windows can be stationary, operating, or any combination thereof.
Bow Window
A series of four or more adjoining windows, usually five, installed on a radius from the building.
Of course there are innumerable shapes and sizes of windows, rounds, semi circles, trapezoids etc. - these usually called GEOMETRICS by the contractors.
