The material used in the Window Frame is extremely important in determining the Energy Efficiency of the window. Let’s look at the most common materials used in window frames.

Aluminum (NOT Energy Efficient)

Many homes have aluminum framed windows. Most are single pane, although many dual pane windows are aluminum. Aluminum was the first material used for replacement windows. Aluminum tends to be less energy efficient due to the fact that aluminum is a conductor of heat and cold.

Vinyl Windows

Vinyl is an excellent material for window frames. They are energy efficient, and virtually maintenance free, and can be installed easily. Vinyl windows are the most popular replacement windows today.

Remember the bottom line in energy efficient windows is trying to allow the least amount of heat to pass through your windows. In the Summer we want to keep the heat out, in the Winter we want to keep the heat in.

Wood Windows

Wood is a very energy efficient material for window frames. However, there can be a lot of maintenance involved with wood windows – like painting and sealing. In spite of the maintenance that is needed, the beauty and energy efficiency of wood frames makes them a good choice for many people.

Fiberglass Windows

This is the truly green choice for window frames. They are more durable, can be painted, are stronger, and are totally recyclable and sustainable. Although slightly more costly than vinyl the long term environmental benefit out weighs the increased cost.
